Travel Rituals & Routines: Why They Matter for Women Traveling Solo Over 50
Thereās something deeply comforting about the familiar especially when it comes to travel and solo travel!
Sure, we jump on a plane filled with excitement for all the exciting new things we will experience butā¦
Even in the middle of all that newness, we carry our habits, our little rituals, and our daily routines right along with us.
Most of the time, we donāt even realize weāre doing it.
Just like brushing our teeth the same way every morning, our travel habits follow us from one destination to the next.
Theyāre subtle...
Theyāre like an automatic reflex kicking in.
And when you're traveling solo, especially for the first timeā¦
Or, after years of traveling with a partner, those habits become your secret travel companion. They anchor you.
They soothe the nerves that come from constant change.
And they help you face the unfamiliar with just a bit more confidence.
Routines From The Past... and What Happens Now
Maybe when you traveled with your spouse or partner, you had your own unspoken systemā¦
šļøYou handled the tickets and š passportsā¦
š§³He took care of the bags and š æļø airport parking. Youād fall into step, knowing who did what and when.

But now?
Itās just you.
Which means itās worth taking a moment to pause and ask:
šWhat were those travel habits I had?
šWhich ones do I want to keep?
šAnd what new ones do I need to create?
This isnāt about reinventing the wheelā¦
Itās about recognizing what makes you feel grounded and prepared, so you can show up for your adventures with ease, excitement, and energy.
My Travel Rituals
Iām thinking about a recent one-day work trip I took.
Nothing dramatic, just a quick hop, but it reminded me how many travel habits Iāve carried over from my āRoad Warriorā days (20 years of back-to-back business trips will do that!).
Here are just a few that make my life simpler:
šThe Same Carry-On Bag I use it for 90% of my trips. Itās like an old friend. I know where everything goes and donāt waste time hunting for things.
šPouches for Everything One for tech, one for toiletries, one for snacks.
šItās my version of organized chaos, but it works.
š Things always in the same pocket or pouch... Non-negotiable.
š Apple Wallet and a Paper Boarding Pass Yes, both. I love my tech but I like a backup too. Passport as ID even for domestic flights Itās just easier.
š No fumbling with a driverās license and phone screen at security.
š A Gentlemanās Handkerchief
This one might sound quirky, but I always carry a traditional manās hanky. Itās practical, yes but itās also a quiet nod to my late husband.
A reminder that heās still with me, in his own way, wherever I go.
Even with over 2 million frequent flier miles and many, many solo trips I still have these small ritualsā¦

Everything organized by the šŖ front door before I leave the next morning.
The Post It Note on my carry on bag to remind me to grab my phone and charger.
Double (maybe even triple) checking that I have my passport, drivers license and credit cardsā¦
These rituals bring me calm!
They also move me into āTravel Modeā and keep me focused.
Travel habits create confidence if youāre navigating solo travel after years of āwe travel,ā know thisā¦
The shift is real, and youāre not alone.
The good news?
Building your own solo travel habits isnāt hard.
In fact, you probably already have a few.
Maybe you always get to the airport early.
Maybe you have a favourite snack for the plane.
Maybe you pack the same cozy scarf or download the same feel-good show for the flight.
All of that matters.
Itās what makes the chaos of travel feel just a bit more⦠you.
Start Here...
As you get ready for your next adventure, take a moment to notice:
š§ What rituals make you feel prepared and at ease?
š§ Are there any past routines that no longer serve you?
š§ What new habits would make solo travel feel smoother, safer, or more joyful?
Trust me, this small bit of awareness makes a BIG difference!
Youāre not just building a new way of traveling youāre creating a rhythm thatās all your own.

So go ahead, pack your bag the way you like it.
Keep the paper boarding pass if it makes you feel better.
Bring that book, that playlist, that familiar hand cream.
